Giant Tiger, how I got my start

I cut my teeth in design as part of the team at Giant Tiger, helping the brand adapt through print and digital marketing — including designing, laying out, and overseeing production of the national and regional weekly flyer.

The Giant Tiger Story

I had many opportunities to help Giant Tiger transform and adapt to the ever-changing retail world during increasing pressure from new competition, through print and digital marketing.

Flyer Design

The Giant Tiger flyer was designed on a weekly cycle, with artwork built around store events, themes and holidays. I created flyer standards for callouts, price bubbles and colour scheme so it had a consistent look and feel every week.

In-Store Ads

While keeping to rigorous company standards, I designed advertising material for special in-store events and store openings. These ads appeared in newspapers, on bus shelters, and across social media.

Brochures & Banners

Banners and advertisements promoted store contests and communicated valuable information to customers, appearing across the flyer and social media alongside other promotional projects like renovation signage and product design.

Wall Posters

I directed photoshoots and created promotional posters for upcoming seasons, picking out clothing and directing models. These three posters were designed to work together on the wall, with shared lines and shapes helping stores know what order to display them.

Packaging

With the help of in-house guidelines, I modernized a wide variety of in-store packaging and product advertising — from canned and frozen goods to contest promotions — carefully choosing colours and photography for the highest shelf presence. The fun part: a tiger tail was hidden somewhere in every design.
